Welcome to 6th Grade Science!

Science in the sixth grade deals with our planet in many ways.  First, we take an in depth look at the phenomenon that many call Catastrophic Events.  This covers weather (thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes), earthquakes, and volcanoes.  Then, we will begin an exploration of Earth and its relationship with the Sun and other planets in our Solar System.  Finally, we will end the year with a closer look at biomes and the ocean.  At Simmons, we utilize a fantastic series of AMSTI (Alabama Math and Science Technology Initiative) modules that provides us with great hands-on learning activities throughout the year.

We also incorporate science notebooks in lieu of textbooks, (which are used primarily as a supplementary text).  Each AMSTI module comes with a student book specific to the unit of study.  All additional information will be given in class and recorded in the student’s notebook.

In addition, technology is utilized whenever possible.  Not only do we use the LCD projectors, document cameras, and interactive websites, but we also have class websites that are specific to the needs of our students.

Feel free to contact us at anytime if you have questions or concerns about your child's science experience at Simmons.  We are excited to meet you!

Language Arts

The Language Arts curriculum in sixth grade encompasses all phases of language arts including writing, reading, vocabulary, and spelling. Using the workshop approach, students learn to use the writing process to write, edit, and rewrite for publication. There will be a focus on the four modes of writing as we teach the writing process as well as English grammar skills.  By the end of sixth grade, students should have a strong background in correct writing techniques including paragraph writing, punctuation, capitalization, and proper sentence structure.  The workshop approach is also used in reading where students are exposed to various genres and encouraged to broaden the types of materials they read as well as their vocabulary.  Included in the reading material are current authors, classics, poetry, fairy tales, biographies, and some real life situations.  Through large group, mini lessons, and individual conferencing, reading skills are taught, reinforced, and extended.  We also try to incorporate the use of technology whenever possible.

Please encourage your child to read and write over the summer! Keeping a journal is a wonderful way to incorporate writing into their other summer activities. Joining the summer reading program at the Hoover Public Library is a great way to keep your child reading!

We look forward to having your child in the upcoming school year and welcome any questions or concerns that you might have. Do not hesitate to contact us
